The engineering/testing services mode of operation enables the better utilization of the facilities; and hence better research facilities and student research opportunities in the future. Through testing services contracts, facilities which are underutilized for research can be scheduled for other purposes.
An example would be a routine mapping of an engine, which requires some technical skill and facilities to conduct but does not result in any IP being generated by OSU-CAR faculty, staff, and students. For these services, OSU-CAR charges a rate that is very competitive with comparable facilities which is used to support and improve the existing facilities. The financial resources that this work brings in are then reinvested in the Center for maintenance of current facilities, investment in new facilities, and for technicians to support the facilities.
